Ten Things No One Knows About Mickey Smith
By. A Moment In Subtext
1. Smith isn't his birth name. Its his mother's maiden name, and when he's lived with his Gran a few years he adopts it as his own. (That's still not what it says on his birth certificate, though.) He tells anyone who asks that its his way of showing that he's moved on from his parents death.
2. He hasn't. He's good enough at pretending, though, and not even his closest mates know the truth. Only his Gran, who hears him crying at night, sometimes.
3. His parents didn't die in a car accident, even though thats what he says. After all, who would believe that an orange-skinned alien trashed their car, zapped his parents with a laser, and ran off upon hearing a strange wail, and seeing the sudden appearance of a blue box?
4. He'd met the Doctor twice before he ever grabbed Rose's hand. Once the night his parents were killed, and once again, a quite a few years later. Neither time did he look like Rose's Doctor.
5. Regardless of that, Mickey recognizes him the first time he gets a look at the Tardis. He recognizes the blue box that had frightened his parents killer, see's the man and knows he's the same. He hears the words "time travel" and knows that this Doctor hasn't met him yet. He says nothing.
6. He doesn't mind when the Doctor calls him Ricky, and after the first couple of time, he learns to tolerate the 'idiot' tacked onto the end. The Doctor's default mode is set to 'insult' and Mickey stopped minding a long time ago.
7. The real reason he declines the Doctor's offer to go with them isn't because he's afraid of the adventures. It's because he doesn't want to get in the way of whatever it was Rose and the Doctor have going on. Or maybe because he doesn't want to see his loss paraded in his face.
8. When Rose tells him that there's nothing between her and the Doctor, he believes her. He shouldn't, no one else does, but he doesn't think Rose would lie to him. He's right.
9. He's never had any illusions about being with Rose forever. He's always knows that some better story/idea/job/bloke would catch her eye and take her fancy, and she'd just Go. It still hurts when it happens.
10. Every time Rose leaves with the Doctor, Mickey watches them. It doesn't matter if its just watcing them run down the street hand-in-hand, or watching the Tardis fade to nothing. He watches, and every time Rose leaves it hurts a little less.
Author's Notes:
I live under the firm conviction that despite what Rose said in episode one about Mickey's mum, both of this parents died while he was young and he's lived with his Gran ever since.
