If you could have one wish, anything in the universe, what would it be?
And none of that, more wishes, or world peace junk either. One selfish wish. Go on, make you. Now, what did you wish for? Don't worry, telling won't stop it from coming true, because wishes are only things you want to happen. And no matter how much you want something to happen, there's no guarantee that it will. Check a Bell Curve diagram if you don't believe me.
Or ask the Doctor, he'll be able to give you a sound, logical explaination on how foolish making wishes is, and the thing is, no matter how nice making a wish sounds, the Doctor is right.
Because the Doctor's always right, and its just not natural.
That's what I wished for. I wished that the Doctor would be absolutely, glaringly wrong just once, when there are no lives riding on his being right. Which is a perfect example of why the Doctor is right about wishes being wrong.
See, in order for the Doctor to be wrong when there are no lives at stake, that requires him to be somewhere there are people for a long period of time without getting into trouble. And that requires a completely different wish.
Of course, even if you could pretend that the Doctor didn't say anything about the impossibility of wishes coming true (because him being wrong about that would turn my wish into a paradox), there are always the people who say "be careful what you wish for." Trust me, even when the Bell Curve is working in your favor (because at some point, everyone has to be wrong, its simply a matter of waiting), the end result may not be something you'd hoped for.
Let me use my own wish as an example. See, my name is Martha Jones, and I've been living in the shadow of this girl named Rose Tyler for, oh, pretty much the entire time I've known the Doctor, and its been made pretty clear to me that she's trapped wherever she is. Parallel world or something, I wasn't paying that much attention.
Anyway, trapped. Not coming back. Never gonna see the Doctor again. His own words: "She's trapped there. The walls have closed." Pretty straightforward, yeah?
Well, just in case you're not smart enough to puzzle that out its basically: Her, there, forever; Him, here, forever; Them meeting again, no.
And I think I've just finally, finally gotten out of her shadow and the Doctor is seeing me instead of a half-way decent Rose-replacement. Which would, of course, be when the Bell Curve decides to favor me, and the Doctor bursts into the console room, all hyper, bouncing energy, and says:
"I forgot! Walls have doors and windows!"
Which, if you've not been paying attention, just makes him sound like a forgetful loon (and I'm not saying he's not a completey loon, just that this isn't an example of that). But if you have been paying attention, (and if you're not then I'm just wasting my breath here and ought to shut up so you had better be paying attention) the Doctor said: "The walls have closed." Do you see? This is why we should never tempt fate by making wishes that the Doctor says don't work.
Or, in other words, when you see a shooting star, don't forget about Murphy's Law.
